Sandboxer vs Render

Render hosts web services, workers, cron jobs and Postgres from Git or Docker, and is testing Sandboxes in early access (2 CPU, 4 GB and 10 GB disk by default, 24 h maximum). Pick Render to host an app; pick Sandboxer for a full per-sandbox VM.

Where Render is strong

  • Five regions and managed Postgres, Key Value and cron.
  • Zero-downtime deploys, private networking and persistent disks.
  • Early-access Sandboxes with memory-inclusive snapshots.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Render Sandboxes are early access, with 2 CPU, 4 GB and 10 GB disk by default (raisable on request), a 24 h limit that can't be raised, and Oregon only.
  • Render's main product is app hosting; Sandboxer is sandbox VMs.
  • Render sandbox filesystems are ephemeral.

Pick Render if

  • You are hosting a web app with database and workers.
  • You need several regions including Frankfurt and Singapore.
  • You want deploy-from-Git with managed Postgres.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • You need a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd, Docker and nested KVM rather than a container or job runner.
  • You want stop to save memory and disk and resume to bring running processes back, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
  • You want coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others) preinstalled and driven through a prompt API, with per-second billing.
