Sandboxer vs Hugging Face Jobs

Hugging Face Jobs runs a command in a Docker image on a chosen hardware flavor (CPU, GPU, TPU) and bills by the second; experimental Sandboxes are built on top of it. It differs from Sandboxer in being job-oriented with a 30-minute default timeout and GPU flavors. Pick it for ML training and batch work; pick Sandboxer for interactive full-VM environments.

Sandboxer and Hugging Face Jobs compared
CapabilitySandboxerHugging Face Jobs
IsolationmicroVM
Cloud Hypervisor, its own kernel
container (Jobs); full VM (dedicated Sandboxes)
Jobs run a Docker image; docs say a dedicated Sandbox is a VM of its own, pooled sandboxes use uid + Landlock.
Full Linux with root
Ubuntu 24.04, sudo, systemd
Docker inside
Preinstalled
partial
Runs any Docker image from Docker Hub or Spaces; running a Docker daemon inside is not documented.
Nested virtualization (/dev/kvm)
Pause and resume with memory

Copy-on-write disk copy that boots fresh

Private with a token, or public
expose_public makes a container port reachable through the Jobs proxy without authentication; expose requires an HF token.
Longest sessionNo limit on paid plans
Auto-stop is up to 30 days or off
30 min default, configurable; 24 h cap for Sandboxes
Jobs accept a timeout in seconds up to days units; dedicated Sandboxes have a fixed 24 h maximum.
BillingPer second, flat rate per size
Stopped sandboxes are free
per second, pay-as-you-go by hardware flavor
Requires a positive credit balance; e.g. cpu-basic 2 vCPU/16 GB $0.01/h, cpu-upgrade 8 vCPU/32 GB $0.03/h.

Where Hugging Face Jobs is strong

  • Wide GPU range (T4 to H200) billed by the second with no setup.
  • Any Docker image can be the environment, including images from Hugging Face Spaces, with volumes mounted from Hub repos and buckets.
  • Jobs can be scheduled with cron syntax, retried, and exposed on ports or reached over SSH.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Jobs are command-oriented with a 30-minute default timeout; Sandboxer sandboxes are persistent full Ubuntu VMs with systemd and root.
  • Hugging Face's Sandboxes are labelled experimental; Sandboxer's sandboxes stop and resume with memory and processes intact.
  • Hugging Face offers GPUs; Sandboxer has no GPUs today.

Pick Hugging Face Jobs if

  • You need GPUs for training, inference or batch data work.
  • You want to run a container image against Hub models and datasets directly.
  • You want scheduled or fire-and-forget jobs billed per second.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • You need a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd, Docker and nested KVM rather than a container or job runner.
  • You want stop to save memory and disk and resume to bring running processes back, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
  • You want coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others) preinstalled and driven through a prompt API, with per-second billing.
