Sandboxer vs Red Hat OpenShift

Red Hat OpenShift is a Kubernetes-based application platform sold self-managed or as ROSA, ARO, OpenShift Dedicated and IBM Cloud services. It is cluster infrastructure, not a sandbox service. Pick it to standardize an enterprise container platform; pick Sandboxer for ready-made VMs.

Where Red Hat OpenShift is strong

  • Self-managed or cloud-managed, with a 99.95% uptime SLA on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud offerings (99.99% on IBM Cloud).
  • Broad platform add-ons: pipelines, GitOps, service mesh, ACM, ACS, OpenShift AI.
  • Runs on your own hardware or major clouds.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • OpenShift is a cluster platform you run workloads on; Sandboxer is single-VM sandboxes created by API.
  • OpenShift pricing involves subscriptions and cloud infrastructure; Sandboxer is $/hour per size.
  • Sandboxer has no SLA during early access; Red Hat lists 99.95% for its AWS, Azure and Google Cloud offerings.

Pick Red Hat OpenShift if

  • You need an enterprise Kubernetes platform with support and SLA.
  • You must run on-premises or in your own cloud account.
  • You want OpenShift Virtualization alongside containers.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • You need a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd, Docker and nested KVM rather than a container or job runner.
  • You want stop to save memory and disk and resume to bring running processes back, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
  • You want coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others) preinstalled and driven through a prompt API, with per-second billing.
