Sandboxer vs Declaw

Declaw runs each agent execution in a Firecracker microVM and routes outbound traffic through a security proxy with guardrails, a credential vault and audit logging. Sandboxer is a general full-VM platform. Pick Declaw for built-in egress guardrails and BYOC; pick Sandboxer for a full machine with Docker and nested KVM.

Where Declaw is strong

  • Built-in egress security proxy with PII and prompt-injection scanning.
  • Self-hosted/BYOC option with Terraform modules.
  • Credential vault, persistent volumes and audit logging in one SDK.
  • $100 free sandbox credit and $200 guardrail credit, no card required.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Declaw puts a policy proxy with guardrails on every outbound request; Sandboxer gives a full VM with root and Docker.
  • Declaw is self-hostable on GCP or AWS; Sandboxer is not self-hostable.
  • Root, Docker, nested virtualization, fork and port URLs are not documented on the pages read.

Pick Declaw if

  • You need PII redaction and prompt-injection checks on agent egress.
  • You need to run the sandbox platform inside your own cloud account.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • You want a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd, Docker and nested KVM, with Claude Code, Codex and other coding agents preinstalled.
  • You want stop to save memory and disk so that resume brings running processes back, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
  • You want one flat monthly plan whose dollars come back as machine time, with sandboxes that can run with no time limit on a paid plan.
