Sandboxer vs OmniRun

OmniRun is an open-source sandbox cloud where each short-lived sandbox is a Firecracker microVM with its own kernel, restored from template memory snapshots in about a second. You can self-host it on one Linux box or use its EU managed service. Pick OmniRun for open-source, self-hosted, short-lived code execution; pick Sandboxer for long-lived full Ubuntu VMs with root, Docker, SSH and fork.

Checked against OmniRun's public docs on October 24, 2026. Sources are linked in the table and listed below.

Where OmniRun is strong

  • Open source (Apache-2.0) and self-hostable on a single Linux machine.
  • Firecracker microVM isolation with network off by default.
  • Sub-second start from template memory snapshots.
  • Self-hosted worker backend for Claude Managed Agents and a desktop/computer-use option.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • OmniRun sandboxes are short-lived and fixed-size per template; Sandboxer VMs are long-lived with chosen sizes.
  • OmniRun lists no SSH, no fork, no user snapshots and no MCP server yet.
  • OmniRun's managed service has no public pricing; Sandboxer publishes hourly rates.
  • OmniRun roots, Docker and nested KVM are not stated.

Pick OmniRun if

  • You need an open-source sandbox you can self-host on your own hardware.
  • You want EU-hosted managed sandboxes (Finland).
  • Your workload is short-lived code execution and CI jobs rather than long-lived dev machines.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • Sandboxer gives each sandbox a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd and Docker preinstalled.
  • Sandboxer stop/resume keeps memory and running processes.
  • Sandboxer exposes any port as an HTTPS URL and bundles Claude Code, Codex and other coding agents.
