Sandboxer vs AWS CodeBuild
AWS CodeBuild runs build projects on EC2 or Lambda compute in your AWS account and bills per build minute (EC2) or second (Lambda). It is a CI service, not an interactive environment. Pick it for builds inside AWS; pick Sandboxer for long-lived workspaces and agents.
Checked against AWS CodeBuild's public docs on October 24, 2026. Sources are linked in the table and listed below.
At a glance
= not documented publicly.
Where AWS CodeBuild is strong
- Builds run inside your own AWS account with IAM, VPC and S3 integration.
- Build timeout of up to 36 hours and a monthly free tier.
- On-demand, Lambda and reserved-capacity fleets including ARM, Windows, macOS and GPU types.
Where Sandboxer differs
- CodeBuild is a one-shot build runner; a Sandboxer sandbox is a persistent VM you can SSH into, stop and resume.
- CodeBuild bills in per-minute (EC2) increments by compute type; Sandboxer bills per second by size.
- CodeBuild builds time out after at most 36 hours; Sandboxer sandboxes on a paid plan can run with no time limit.
Pick AWS CodeBuild if
- Your CI already lives in AWS and needs IAM and VPC integration.
- You need Windows, macOS, ARM or GPU build environments.
- You need reserved build fleets.
Pick Sandboxer if
- You need a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd, Docker and nested KVM rather than a container or job runner.
- You want stop to save memory and disk and resume to bring running processes back, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
- You want coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others) preinstalled and driven through a prompt API, with per-second billing.
