Sandboxer vs Unikraft Cloud

Unikraft Cloud runs each instance as its own microVM built from a Dockerfile image, with scale-to-zero, millisecond resume, VM forking and checkpoints. It is an app and workload platform more than an interactive Linux box. Pick Unikraft for very fast, high-density, scale-to-zero services; pick Sandboxer for a full Ubuntu VM to log into.

Checked against Unikraft Cloud's public docs on October 24, 2026. Sources are linked in the table and listed below.

Where Unikraft Cloud is strong

  • Scale-to-zero in under 10 ms with millisecond resume of stateful apps.
  • VM forking and checkpoint/rewind of running instances.
  • Hosted, dedicated hosted, BYOC and on-prem deployment options.
  • Hobby free tier; Team at $39/month.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Unikraft runs minimal Linux-based microVM images built from a Dockerfile; interactive shell or SSH use is not documented, while Sandboxer is a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with systemd and SSH.
  • Unikraft documents VM forks that preserve a live VM; Sandboxer forks boot fresh from a disk snapshot.
  • Unikraft lists GPUs only in enterprise preview and on-prem for Enterprise; Sandboxer has neither.
  • Per-unit rates were not available on the pages checked.

Pick Unikraft Cloud if

  • You run many small, bursty services and need near-instant scale-to-zero and resume.
  • You need on-prem or dedicated hosting.
  • You want a live-VM fork that preserves running state.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • Each Sandboxer sandbox is a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with its own kernel, root/sudo, systemd and Docker preinstalled.
  • Stopping saves memory and disk and resume brings running processes back; stopped sandboxes cost nothing.
  • Coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and others) are preinstalled and driven through a prompt API, with an MCP server, REST API, CLI and TypeScript and Python SDKs.
