Sandboxer vs Omnara

Omnara is an open-source platform for running managed agents: it stores agent state in an event log and runs shell work on machines from Omnara, your own Daytona/Blaxel/E2B/Modal-type accounts, or a daemon on your own hardware. It is an agent runtime layer rather than a VM product. Pick Omnara to orchestrate agents over any machine provider; pick Sandboxer when you want the VM itself with root, Docker and nested KVM.

Checked against Omnara's public docs on October 24, 2026. Sources are linked in the table and listed below.

Where Omnara is strong

  • Open source under Apache 2.0, self-hostable.
  • Agents are durable event-log objects that use no compute when idle.
  • Works with Omnara machines, your own providers, or a daemon on your laptop or server.
  • Tool permissions, approvals, audit history and MCP support.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Omnara runs agents over machines from others; Sandboxer is the microVM and its own agent runtime.
  • Machine isolation, Docker and root access depend on the chosen provider and are not specified by Omnara.
  • Omnara has no fixed per-size machine price page; Sandboxer publishes per-size hourly rates.

Pick Omnara if

  • You want an open-source agent orchestration layer you can self-host.
  • You want to bring your own machine provider, model keys or laptop.
  • You need human approvals and audit history around agent tool calls.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • Sandboxer gives each sandbox a full Ubuntu 24.04 VM with root, systemd and Docker preinstalled.
  • Sandboxer stop/resume keeps memory and running processes.
  • Sandboxer exposes any port as an HTTPS URL and bundles Claude Code, Codex and other coding agents.
