Sandboxer vs MIOSA

MIOSA is a broad agent platform whose sandboxes are Firecracker microVMs with Docker, preview URLs, snapshots and forks, alongside GUI computers and app hosting. Its pause keeps processes for up to 30 minutes, after which a stop keeps only the disk, while Sandboxer's stop always keeps memory and processes. Pick MIOSA if you want desktops, deployments, data and white-label in one product or several US regions; pick Sandboxer for long-lived VMs that resume with processes intact, nested KVM, or a lower hourly rate.

Sandboxer and MIOSA compared
CapabilitySandboxerMIOSA
IsolationmicroVM
Cloud Hypervisor, its own kernel
Firecracker microVM
Firecracker is the default runtime; a SOMA runtime is also offered (no pause, persistence or snapshots yet).
Full Linux with root
Ubuntu 24.04, sudo, systemd
Commands run through exec run as root on the default template.
Docker inside
Preinstalled
Docker Engine 29.9 with Compose and Buildx preinstalled in the main image.
Nested virtualization (/dev/kvm)
Not documented.
Pause and resume with memory
Running processes come back
partial
pause keeps memory and processes on Firecracker only, for at most 30 minutes; after that, and on any stop, only the disk is kept.
Fork a sandbox
Copy-on-write disk copy that boots fresh
Fork captures a copy-on-write checkpoint of a running sandbox into a new sandbox; named snapshots can seed new sandboxes.
HTTPS URL per port
Private with a token, or public
Each exposed port gets an HTTPS preview URL (e.g. https://3000-<id>.sandbox.miosa.ai), with visibility and share-token controls.
Longest sessionNo limit on paid plans
Auto-stop is up to 30 days or off
idle timeout 1 s to 24 h; always_on option
timeout_sec defaults to 3600 and accepts up to 86400, counted from last activity; always_on lets a sandbox run until stopped where policy permits.
BillingPer second, flat rate per size
Stopped sandboxes are free
per second by size, credits
$0.03024 per vCPU-hour plus $0.009675 per GiB-hour RAM while running; stopped/paused machines pay storage only. Plans Free/$20/$500/$2000 include credits.
GPUs
Native GPU sandboxes are listed as planned, targeted early 2027.
Self-host or open sourcepartial
Bring Your Own Cloud on AWS or GCP is activation-gated; MIOSA stays the control plane. Not described as open source.

MIOSA

Where MIOSA is strong

  • One account covers sandboxes, GUI desktop computers, Docker Host deployments with custom domains, and managed databases.
  • Three US regions are live, with region pinning on create.
  • Snapshots, restore and copy-on-write forks are first-class resources, and named snapshots can act as templates.
  • Persistent sandboxes wake on request when their preview URL or API is hit.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • MIOSA pause keeps processes for at most 30 minutes and a stop keeps only the disk; Sandboxer's stop keeps memory and processes with no time limit.
  • A MIOSA 4 vCPU / 8 GiB sandbox lists at $0.1984/h versus $0.036/h for Sandboxer's default size.
  • MIOSA runs in three US regions and offers gated BYOC on AWS/GCP; Sandboxer runs in us-east and eu-central and has no self-hosting.
  • Sandboxer documents nested KVM and SSH with public IPv6; MIOSA sandboxes have no public SSH endpoint and reach in through an authenticated tunnel.

Pick MIOSA if

  • You want sandboxes, GUI computers and production app hosting with custom domains in one platform.
  • You need a choice of US regions or want workers inside your own AWS or GCP account.
  • You are building a white-label agent product and want managed data and domains alongside the sandbox.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • Your agent sessions run for days and must resume with running processes intact after a stop.
  • You need nested KVM, SSH/SCP or a public IPv6 address per sandbox.
  • You want lower per-hour compute cost on 4 vCPU / 8 GB machines with per-second billing.
