Sandboxer vs DigitalOcean Droplets

Droplets are DigitalOcean's Linux virtual machines, sold in Basic, CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, Memory-Optimized and Storage-Optimized plans, with GPU Droplets and 16 datacenters. You manage the OS and tooling. Sandboxer is a preconfigured agent sandbox VM with memory-preserving stop/resume and fork. Where DigitalOcean Droplets is strong

  • Simple plan lineup with published hourly prices and a monthly cap; a 4 vCPU / 8 GiB Basic Droplet is $0.07143 per hour.
  • Per-second billing from 2026-01-01.
  • GPU Droplets (NVIDIA and AMD) and 16 datacenters.

Where Sandboxer differs

  • Droplets are generic VMs; Sandboxer ships an agent-ready Ubuntu VM with Docker, nested KVM and an API.
  • DigitalOcean's pages reviewed do not state whether nested virtualization works on Droplets; Sandboxer provides /dev/kvm in every sandbox.
  • Memory-preserving pause, fork and per-port HTTPS URLs are not described in the Droplets docs reviewed.

Pick DigitalOcean Droplets if

  • You want simple, predictable VM pricing with a monthly cap.
  • You need GPU Droplets or several datacenters.
  • You run general hosting rather than agent sandboxes.

Pick Sandboxer if

  • You want a sandbox that stops with memory and disk saved and resumes with processes running, with stopped sandboxes costing nothing.
  • You want Docker, systemd, nested KVM, SSH and coding agents (Claude Code, Codex and others) already installed, with HTTPS URLs for any port, without assembling it yourself.
  • You want a per-second-billed Ubuntu 24.04 VM driven by a REST API, CLI, MCP server or TypeScript/Python SDK.
